![]() In spite of the reassurance from USPS, Imperial Beach City Council and members of the public are still concerned about the future of their post office. It has provided residents access to a physical location for a number of services including mailing letters, sending packages, taking passport photos, buying stamps, as well as dropping off vote-by-mail ballots amongst other services. In Imperial Beach the post office has kept its doors open to the community at its Donax Avenue location since 1956, according to the South Bay Historical Society. It can be completed in a few steps, online at, or by visiting one of more than 33,000 local Post Office locations. The Change of Address service remains simple and convenient to use. It first started on Jby the Second Continental Congress who appointed Benjamin Franklin as its first postmaster general. These enhancements are designed to address global identity theft concerns, and to protect our customers information. The history of the USPS goes back over 200 years. The changes to service standard times are part of the Postal Services 10-year strategic plan, which was announced by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy in March. “We are committed to serving our Imperial Beach customers and have absolutely no plans to close the current facility or to depart the Imperial Beach community,” Gonzales wrote. Postal Service will employ new service standards' that will result in slower delivery for mail traveling long distances, such as from New York to California. Many rates went up, but rates for Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express did not change, and rates for some. The Postal Service just confirmed that it will make an unprecedented change later this month. In an email, Duke Gonzales with USPS told KPBS the Imperial Beach Post Office is not closing.
